Why this petition matters

Started by Sienna Bloom

Women and girls are disproportionately affected by school dress codes and regularly harassed and sexualized by staff.

Dress codes are supposedly enforced to create a distraction free learning environment, but they continue to be utilized to punish women with disciplinary actions that affect their futures and education.

Female students are subject to a greater amount of this degrading, demeaning, and humiliating treatment which like any kind of body-shaming can negatively impact their mental health and self-esteem.

How does a dress code promote an effective learning environment if it is taking students out of class and away from their education, resulting in suspensions and being marked late to class?

What a student is wearing does not affect or influence other students and does not have any correlation to their ability to excel academically.

The only thing that dress codes do is increase self-esteem issues in girls and increase the sexualization of and predatory behavior towards underage girls.
