Proposed cuts to PVTA routes and fare increases will cut services to those who critically need them--many of them students. The proposed fare increases will disproportionately disadvantage the poor, minorities, and other marginalized communities. Moreover, the reduced bus routes will make transportation even less accessible to the disabled. Finally, decreased access to PVTA services will result in more drunk driving, and thus a higher rate in deaths associated with such.
The Massachusetts Ways and Means Committee must recognize that the proposed cuts to this service are violence. Injustice is the first level of violence, and these proposed cuts are unjust not only in that they unfairly target disadvantaged communities, but also in that drunk driving accidents will increase as a result of these cuts.
Tell the Ways and Means Committee: The UMass Student body rejects this act of violence and stands in solidarity with the surrounding communities.
