Why this petition matters

Started by Sean Lilly

Should the government introduce mandatory quarantines during the current coronavirus outbreak, such quarantines could last as long as fourteen days.  A  quarantine of two weeks would force families into an untenable position as wage earners would lose two weeks' pay if they do not receive paid sick leave from their employer.  Even those workers that do enjoy paid sick leave almost certainly do not have enough paid time off accrued to cover two weeks at what would necessarily be short notice.  This petition therefore calls upon Governor Baker and Massachusetts state legislators to create and pass a law requiring all Massachusetts employers to pay their employees at the their current rate of compensation for the duration of a mandatory quarantine should one be instituted.  Such a law would greatly enhance the integrity of a potential quarantine by assuring Massachusetts workers that they will not suffer economic catastrophe as they comply with a quarantine that, while necessary, would be undertaken due to  circumstances quite out of their control. With anxiety around coronavirus running high, anxiety around paying the bills should not be added to it.
