On the evening of June 20, 2007, Daniel Tompkins was the operator of an uninsured Ford Expedition SUV involved in a single vehicle high speed crash which claimed the life of two of his passengers and left the third with serious injuries.
In the four years that followed, Daniel Tompkins and his attorney utilized various stall tactics to avoid facing responsibility, and retained a private investigator who elicited false testimony from phony witnesses. While free on bail, Daniel Tompkins was also in violation of his pretrial probation by failing a toxicology screen for narcotics not prescribed to him, and for being picked up by the police in a state of extreme intoxication from alcohol.
Despite his attempts to avoid paying for his crime, Daniel Tompkins was found guilty of vehicular manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and drunken driving in a crash that the judge called the worst he had ever seen. Showing no remorse and continuing to deny any responsibility, Daniel Tompkins was sentenced on June 23, 2011, to 8-12 years for the 2 deaths.
Daniel Tompkins will have his first parole hearing in October 2017, after having spent only six years in prison, while the crash survivor and families of his victims have been handed a life sentence.
