Recently, the MBTA management team has decided to eliminate the Zero Emission trolleybuses run by routes 71, 73, and 77A for a new fleet of Diesel-Electric Hybrid Buses that produce low emissions of greenhouse gases, still allowing the dirtiest diesel to do normal service even after the trolleybuses are gone. The MBTA claims that it will be more "innovative" than trolleybuses that could include motion charging. However, this decision is a problem because this will impact the environments of Cambridge, Watertown, and Belmont due to more greenhouse gases filling up in the air. In addition, it does not show to be a better solution for a cleaner fleet for the two Harvard-based routes. The trolleybuses are also claimed to be "burdensome" due to the overhead wires that give the buses power. Although this seems reasonable by the MBTA, the motion charging trolleybuses could easily answer that problem because the overhead wires power up the battery, allowing service to resume even if something happens to the overhead wires. Others have gone on the topic of how the MBTA should handle how to modernize the fleet, and all of them agree that the trolleybuses shouldn't be replaced at all. Getting rid of the solution of a problem you are trying so desperately trying to solve is going to get you nowhere if you agree with the statements above, please consider signing this petition? It might even change the MBTA's mind on how they should move forward.
