Stop Merrill Pond System Closures in Sutton

DCR is trying to close several ponds in the Merrill Pond System. They own the land, ponds and dams. It has become abundantly apparent that they don't want the responsibility of maintaining the ponds. There solution, which has been underway for several years, was to get the Department of Dam Safety to deem the "Dams" (I dont believe they meet the legal definition of dams), unsafe. What they are calling dams are small spillways several of which are in bad condition.
Even if these spillways failed there are no people, no residences downstreeam. There is a gas pipeline but there are gas pipelines virtually everywhere and the gas company is responsible for their upkeep.
DCR solution is to drain several of the ponds rendering them marshes and swamps. This will eliminate their responsibility for maintaining the ponds almost completely.. I ask for you voice to be heard on this matter and not be persuaded by overly intellectualized arguments on how Sutton will be better without the ponds. No one has ever died from a flood in Sutton. The volumes of water these measures will save us from are Biblical. If we ever get that much water there won't be a town.
Lets save a beautiful and rich habitat utilized by diverse wildlife. Take action before it is too late. Meetings and promulgation of this issue have been scheduled on short notice to few people and are held at inopportune times. Action will be taken soon - the Environmental Impact Statement comment period will close in a few weeks.
