Masks should be optional (PRHS)
Masks should be optional (PRHS)
At Palmetto Ridge High School, our campus looks like some sort of disease breakout zone. Our day looks something like this: We get into the campus and are immediately told to put on our mask if it isnt on already. Take in mind that when you arrive early you are outside in florida weather. Within minutes you mask starts getting moist. The bell rings and we go to our 1st period. We arrive and take out our laptops. No paper submissions are allowed and our masks are to be on at all times. The only break we get from it is to slip down our mask to take a sip of water. Some teachers will make you go outside to take a sip of water. With the masks we are required to social distance. The only real break we get from masks is lunch time, roughly 20-25 minutes. The situation at lunch is ridiculous as well. Almost everybody is outside and are to be 6 feet apart with and without a mask. The picnic tables are usuable able to comfortably seat 8 people. This is significant because 2 of the benches on the four bench table are blocked and no one is allowed to sit on these blocked spots. Along with this rule, only 1 person are allowed on each bench and the 2 people at bench are not allowed to face each other without a mask on. Then once we are done with lunch we are required to put our mask back on and continue throughout the rest of the day. Not so bad? You might believe so if you weren't the student spending 7 hours in school with a mask on restricting their breathing as well as distracting them from class. And if your the student and you dont think it is that bad you might be able to breathe through your mask but common sense proves that the easier you can breathe through a mask... means that your mask is less useful. Let alone the new complaints about the warning of the CCPS masks proving that they cannot prevent diseases. What are masks even for then? Warming your face? That was my grandpa's thought. Anyways, since we are in Florida we all know about the murky, sticky, and humid air. Combine this with masks and the 95% of the time you're switching classes, you're outside, and you have an annoying combination and a wet, nasty, and smelly mask that your going to continue to breathe through for the rest of the day. The county has given us the option of in-person learning or virtual. They unfortunately have the power to say that if you dont want to wear a mask you can transfer to online learning. It's terrible both ways for the students here at PRHS because virtual learning without seeing anybody or going outside as much severely impacts your mental health. That is not the main point though. Masks should be optional. Why are we feeding on this lie that you're protecting others by wearing your mask? If you're wearing the mask, you believe it's going to protect you yet the manufacturers for the masks specifically state that they do not prevent diseases. Other schools near PRHS are also following these same "procedures". Such as Corkscrew Middle and Elementary. Some main issues and why:
They make our voices muffled
These masks muffle our voice to the point where teachers have to ask again. Those kids who talk very quietly? They are silent now
They become moist and sweaty in humid air
Most of the time we are outside which results in the humidity dampening our masks and making the whole experience unpleasant. The moisture also clogs up more of the mask making it harder to breathe.
Masks should be optional
The main point of this entire text. Masks should be optional for teachers and students. Anyone who feels unsafe wears a mask themselves. Simple as that. If they feel unsafe still then THEY go home to do online. It is unfair to subject the majority to wearing masks while it should be the minority. Think about this. What do you think would happen if you let everyone decide if they would wear a mask or not? Most likely 90% or more of the people would choose not to wear a mask.
This has to change. We have no choice. We should be able to attend a required activity for all children without having some of our natural bodily functions restricted. I strongly believe there are others who agree. If you have read this far you may agree as well.
