The ASL and ASL - English interpreting program at Maryville College is currently a division of the behavioral sciences. It is included in the same category as psychology and neuroscience. American sign language is used all over the United States by millions of people. ASL satisfies all necessary criteria for being a full and legitimate language. To classify ASL and Deaf culture as a behavior science is to say that sign language is nothing more than a simple system of gestures. We must give due respect to the language and to the culture by fully recognizing ASL as a language. We are petitioning that Maryville College must change the ASL and Interpreting department from a division of Behavioral Science, to become a division of Languages and Literature.
