Cup and Chaucer, a locally owned cafe located in the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie, LA, opened in March 2013, bringing coffee and espresso drinks, made to order sandwiches, fresh salads, and delicious desserts to the patrons of the main library in Jefferson Parish. Patrons of the library, many of whom are nursing students, med students, high school students, as well as genealogy researchers and retired patrons were delighted to find a place where they could study and read all day, with coffee and lunch options available without having to leave the library.
Soon, Cup and Chaucer’s customer base expanded into a local following, with non-Library patrons joining us for lunch favorites like Red Beans Anne Rice and Edgar Allen Poe Boy. Our seven employees work hard to make sure our customers have the very best options for lunch and snacks.
As Cup and Chaucer’s lease nears its end in December 2017, the Library has decided to replace the cafe with vending machines. The Library Director has not given the owner of Cup and Chaucer a reason why this decision has been made.
Please help us let the Library Director and the Jefferson Parish Councilmembers know that closing the cafe and replacing the delicious, freshly prepared food with candy and chips from an impersonal vending machine is a terrible idea. Please help us save Cup and Chaucer!
