PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION TO URGE LAWMAKERS TO ALLOW SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS THE OPTION TO REPEAT OR EXTEND THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR DUE TO COVID-19.

Special Education students in Maryland who have lost out on significant learning time due to the pandemic should be allowed to repeat and/or extend  their school year.

Special Needs students who are in their final year of high school face an unprecedented obstacle as they complete their high school career. 2020-2021 Transitioning Students are currently in a critical crisis, as well as students who are approaching 21 years old. After graduation, they could be left with little to no options for transitioning to an adult program.

Following Governor Hogan’s mandate to shutdown, many adult day and residential transition programs have been closed since March 2020 and have yet to reopen.

2020-2021 Transitioning students are in danger of slipping through the cracks as many of them will be left with no options for transitioning after June 2021 graduation.

The government and school board need to consider urgently how it will support special needs students and, in doing so, it should also look at whether they should be allowed to repeat and/or extend the school year if it's in their best interest.

WE URGE YOU TO SIGN THIS PETITION IN EFFORT TO GET LAWMAKERS TO OFFER POLICY THAT WILL SUPPORT EQUITABLE EDUCATION PRACTICES FOR SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS.
