Ben Dalbey started this petition to Maryland State Board of Education

We are families with children attending Baltimore City Public Schools.  We are calling on the state board of education to direct BCPSS that no grades assigned to student work from March 16 through the rest of the school year will negatively impact any student’s report card grades or academic credit.

We support our children’s teachers and administrators.  We appreciate everything our school communities have already done to prioritize our families’ health and safety during this tumultuous time.  We applaud the school district’s work in prioritizing food distribution and believe BCPSS should continue to be a resource for community health and safety in the ongoing social crisis caused by COVID-19.

Academic work children can do at home, whether assigned online or distributed as paper packets, can be a source of comfort and stability for families during this time.  However, the extreme inequality in home environments across Baltimore, combined with the stress and trauma currently affecting parents, grandparents, children and other family members, would make grading any of this work for credit a violation of the BCPSS equity policy as well as any sense of human decency.

For these reasons and others we are calling on MSDE to support BCPSS and the Baltimore Teachers Union by issuing guidance that no grades during this time will adversely impact any student's grades or academic credit.
