My daughter Laycie, is a kindergartener In a Maryland Public school system. She has missed 7 days of school, which were all legal absence. Well, suppose to be. But according to the “Chronically absentee program” in which the state of Maryland has in affect. Results Is punishing our children for being sick, even if you have a doctors note. Laycie had strep throat, 2 days, fever. Stomach virus1, 3 days. fever/vomiting. Stomach virus2, 2 days. Fever/vomiting. We are told to keep children home from school while sick. I received a letter, sent home with my child. Letting me know what MSDE’s guidelines are. And honestly, they are not okay! Because of this, she will not be able to attend field trips, will be missing portion of recess to do behavioral work with councilor and or school work. She will be pulled from any special activities where she will have to do school work, she will not be able to attend any extracurricular activities. And she will not be able to redeem behavioral rewards through dojo point system. A kindergartener.. “Chronically absent students include students who are absent from school, for any reason. Including Illness, suspension and or the need to care for a family member, regardless if absence are excused, or unexcused” my child has a weak immune system and also has asthma which the school nurse is aware of. My daughter, and all of Maryland children. Are being punished for being sick. This issue needs to be addressed and changed. Children as young as pre-K are being punished for being sick, when they are enforcing children to come to school Ill. Not only are they being punished, but other household members are being put at risk, by allowing children to attend sick. Infants and elderly live in the homes of many children who attend Maryland public schools. We have to Vaccinate to ensure the safety of others health. But that needs to apply with being sick as well, because What the schools fail to realize is there are illnesses they are allowing to spread, and punishing if not at school. Could be deadly to others. (Rsv, Atypical pneumonia ect) when my son was 2 weeks old he almost had to be hospitalized from Atypical pneumonia, who he got infected with from Laycie, who attends Maryland public schools. I am a respectable. Responsible mother who tries her hardest not contribute to spreading illness. And because of that, my child is being punished. I have yet to get a response. Our school system is failing these children. They need to focus more on illness control, then punishing for NOT coming to school sick. They have sent letters home last year almost weekly “your child may have been exposed to flu, strep ect” then they get in trouble for contacting those same illnesses. Please sign and spread awareness! Our Children do not deserve to be punished for being sick.
