End Gender Discrimination in Maryland Auto Insurance

We, the undersigned, are writing today to urge you to end gender discrimination in setting rates for auto insurance. For too long, insurance companies in Maryland have been driving up car insurance prices for female drivers, regardless of their driving records.
Insurance companies use a slew of factors that are unrelated to a person’s driving record to set their auto insurance rate, including sex and marital status. Other factors include homeownership, education, occupation, zip code, and credit score. Cumulatively, these factors drive up insurance prices for low-income people, people of color, and women.
In January, the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition (MCRC) released a research report that looked at the pervasive gender discrimination embedded within auto insurance rates in Maryland. Our research found that women are charged as much as 39% more than men for a basic policy, and that women who are single are penalized, on average with a 24% increase for their marital status, while men who are single frequently receive a discount.
These findings were underscored by the Consumer Federation of America’s look at this issue across the entire country in a recent 2017 research report. CFA’s testing found that female drivers in Baltimore, Minneapolis, and Tampa were most likely to pay more than male drivers compared with the other cities tested. MCRC’s research reveals that it isn’t just Baltimore where this phenomenon holds true – it’s through the entire state of Maryland.
Not only is this an issue of economic injustice, it's an issue of discrimination of women backed up by a powerful industry and held in place by profit.
The undersigned community members and organizations look to you, as leaders of the state, to put an end to this practice once and for all and stand up for Maryland drivers.
Please join the movement to help Maryland families attain affordable and fair auto insurance.
