Impaired driving is defined as driving under the influence of a substance hindering your ability to drive. It is different from distracted driving, such as texting while driving because it is caused during the act of driving, Impaired driving happens before getting behind the while. This happens when you drink excessive amounts of alcohol, overusing legal or illegal drugs, smoking marijuana to the point of intoxication, and even when you are fatigued from lack of sleep. “Driving after going more than 20 hours without sleep is the equivalent of driving with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08% – the U.S. legal limit”, According to the CDC “Drugs other than alcohol (legal and illegal) are involved in about 16% of motor vehicle crashes.” and “10,497 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.” and “Marijuana users were about 25% more likely to be involved in a crash than drivers with no evidence of marijuana use”, despite other factors such as age and gender playing a role it doesn’t change the fact that many have died driving under the influence of this substance, The amount only increased once marijuana became legal in many states throughout the country, . This issue in our day to day life can be prevented by a combination of making better choices for our mental and physical health such as getting your sleep, not using illegal drugs or overdosing on medicated drugs, and consuming alcohol to an excessive degree, know when to put the bottle down, and advancements in technology such as self-driving vehicles to help get impaired drivers safely, drowsiness alerts and lane departure warnings installed in vehicles. Impaired driving can be prevented but we must do our part as prospective and active motorists to ensure the safety of those around us.
