The first time I was admitted to a behavioral hospital, I was sent to Newcastle, Delaware, an hour and a half away from my home. The closest behavioral hospital was in Cambridge, but it was full, as was usual for them. When I was eventually sent to the hospital in Cambridge, I found the staff were insensitive, unkind, and very poorly trained. I soon learned this is the case in most of Maryland's mental health facilities. Parents are driving across state lines every week to visit their child, waiting for days in a hospital bed for a space at a behavioral hospital to become available, breaking their backs to find a reputable and accommodating treatment center. I, for one, find it outrageous.
There is a severe lack of resources for those in need of treatment, and the resources that do exist are extremely inadequate. Staff members are untrained and unqualified, living conditions are pitiful, and they treatment they provide is just plain ignorant. Maryland's Mental Health Department needs to do better. We need more facilities, better training for the staff, and more attention for in general for mental health treatment. Rates of youth with severe depression are increasing (they have gone from from 5.9% in 2012 to 8.2% in 2015.). This is a very real issue that is becoming bigger everyday. Help Maryland youth receive better mental health treatment.
