Maryland Basketball has disappointed its students and fans for far too long. In the last 10 years, we have produced 8 NBA draft picks, yet have failed to make a single Elite 8 appearance. We have continued to miss out on recruiting high-end prospects, even though the DMV is known to have one of the greatest basketball talent pools in the country. Enter Rick Pitino, known as one of the best coaches in college basketball history. His resume is impeccable, with 7 final four appearances and 2 national championships between his tenures at Louisville and Kentucky. Even at Iona, after two short years, he has fully transformed their program, leading to NCAA tournament appearances and multiple high-profile wins.  Sure his recruiting tactics may be a bit "unconventional", but very few Power 5 basketball coaches have clean records, and his players love to play for him. He is known for his ability to get the most out of the talent on his roster, which Maryland has struggled mightily with recently. Already 8 games into the season with a 5-3 record, Maryland has severely underachieved given preseason expectations and doesn't look like a team capable of making a run in March. Hiring Rick Pitino can change that, and could bring an energy back to Maryland basketball not seen since the days of Gary Williams.
