HELP CHANGE STUDENT TRANSPORTATION POLICIES SO RURAL MB CHILDREN CAN GET TO SCHOOL SAFELY!

Hi, my name is Mary Newton and I have two sons aged 5 and 7 that have been denied bus transportation in Mountain View School Division (rural Manitoba) due to our residence being within the 1.6 km boundary.  I've requested bus transportation because we live on Provincial Trunk Highway 83 in Roblin MB and have no safe way for them to cross. This stretch of highway running through town is Queen St. There are only 3 streets that run off of it (2nd ave, 5th ave, and Goose Lake Dr E), where they would potentially cross. Turning off these streets and onto the Queen St is very dangerous for cars, because the line of sight both north and south bound are limited due to sharp curves and speed. Speed is the worst issue because the speed limit changes from 70 km to 50 km just before the curve and so by the curve, vehicles are still doing 70 km. There are no crosswalk's, sidewalk's or pedestrian signs along Queen street anywhere, again, deeming this stretch of highway extremely unsafe to cross. I NEVER allow my boys to cross this highway by themselves ever! They get driven to school. According to the Public Schools Act which states in section 43(1) Transportation of Pupils; "Subject to provisions of this Act and the regulations, in all cases where transportation of pupils is required, it shall be provided for those pupils who have more than 1.6 km to walk in order to reach school, and, further, provision for transportation from home to school shall be made regardless of distance for those pupils who are unable to walk to school because of physical or other handicaps." Nowhere in this Act is safety mentioned which is ridiculous, and terrifying!!! This is a Manitoba Act, however some divisions in Manitoba, such as Beautiful Plains and Fort La Bosse, have adopted their own transportation policies which have included safety in their warrants for pupil pick up. I am asking for support to help change the MVSD policy to include safety (more specifically safe (crosswalk, sidewalk etc) crossing of highway's) so that my two son's, the 5 other students on my street, and all children from the 13 elementary schools in MVSD, get to school safely. I need names and letters of support to make getting to school safely one of the warrants for bus pick up. So please sign this petition before October 20, 2017 so we can affect change. For anyone wishing to write a letter, please e-mail it to: marylnewton@hotmail.com. Thank you for your time and consideration. ONLY together we can make a difference!!!
