Governor Haslam: Bring Tennessee into the US Climate Alliance

0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!

In June of this year President Trump made the unilateral decision to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Paris Climate Accord. In making this move, President Trump ignored not only decades of worldwide scientific research that validates the reality of global warming and the true and present danger it brings to our planet, but also the commitment that the United States and 195 other nations made to combat this threat. Earlier this month, Syria announced it would sign the Paris Accord, leaving the President of the United States standing alone in his rebuke of an agreement in which every other nation has chosen to participate.

In response to President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the worldwide pact, mayors from across the country (including Nashville mayor Megan Barry) stated their intent to comply with the Paris Agreement and continue local efforts to create clean energy and reduce greenhouse gases. Also in response to President Trump’s decision, Governors Jerry Brown, Andrew Cuomo and Jay Inslee created the United States Climate Alliance, a bi-partisan coalition of states committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and honoring the goals of the Paris Agreement.

To date, governors of fifteen states have chosen to join United States Climate Alliance, and I am respectfully requesting that Govern Haslam bring Tennessee in as the sixteenth. In doing so, he would be joining state and world leaders in showing that the battle against global warming is both necessary and worthwhile and that action on climate change can create clean energy jobs and strengthen local economies.

It is our hope and belief that in the best interests of this state, this country and this planet, Governor Haslam will advocate on our behalf and bring Tennessee into the United States Climate Alliance as the sixteenth and southernmost state choosing to support and uphold the goals of the Paris Climate Accord.
