Recast the role of T'Challa
Recast the role of T'Challa
I know that 2020 has been a difficult year for us. The loss of Chadwick earlier this year was hard for us all; Chad was an iconic role model and hero himself. From the energy that he brought to every character on screen to his actions off screen, this man really was a real life superhero. Thanks to him, Ryan, and Marvel, we received another hero that I did not know I needed with T’Challa. I believe that Disney should recast T’Challa.
In 2016, Marvel and Disney introduced the world to T'Challa, role model, hero and king, in Captain American: Civil War. We met T’Challa under unfortunate circumstances. We have seen that even though he had rage and guilt for his father's death, he did not let that change him and he stepped up for his family and country (unlike his cousin Kilmonger). One crucial life lesson that people around the world can look up to, especially young black men can learn. T’Challa and Wakanda as a whole have brought inspiration to our communities. There are rumors and some may want Shuri to take over the mantle (she has done so in the comics), however T’Challa still has conflicts to resolve, lessons to teach, and people to inspire. It could be assumed that Ryan has an amazing vision and story to tell us; it would be wonderful to see said vision manifest and unfold. A recast for T’Challa does not mean that Chad and his work will be forgotten or replaced; if anything I believe it's crucial that we build upon the foundation that he had set. I wish to see the T'Challa marry Storm after a love triangle with Nakia. I am happy that I can be a Black Panther one day to someone who looks up to me rather than a Superman or Spiderman.
Marvel already has the tools to accomplish a recast smoothly within the MCU through the Multiverse. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a T’Challa from a different universe can be planted in our universe through a post credit scene. That way Ryan can still tell his original story with a slight variation rather than going in a completely different direction or rushing things. I envision a powerful scene where the new T’Challa pays his respects to the original, while receiving respects and acknowledgement from the characters and audience. Recasts are not always a terrible idea. Of course there will be pressure to live up to the expectation and performance set by Chad, however if the writers choose to go with the solution I stated, or something similar, there will be a different T’Challa. All that's needed for the actor is make the character their own, pay homage to Chad, and leave it all on the big screen.
