Make Spider-Heart Official
Karah is my 5 year old daughter. Karah is autistic. We only found out in 2018 that she was autistic. It has been said that girls "hide" their autism better than boys do, meaning that it is often harder to diagnose little girls.
Karah has what we call a special interest and if I gave you 1 minute too look at photos of her or hang out with her she will tell you...she LOVES Spider-Man...I mean she is OBSESSED with him. She has been this way since she was 2 years old so yes that means before we even knew she was autistic that is when her love for the character started. She turned 2, two days before Captain America: Civil War came out, that is when Spider-Man made his MCU debut, aka Tom Holland. However, do not get her obession confused, she loves SPIDER-MAN not the actor.
When she was 2 years old her Mimi told me to have Karah look on amazon for a new soccer ball...so I did. All I typed into the search was "toddler soccer ball" and we scrolled through...she saw the one she wanted...it had Spider-Man on it and that moment is when she fell in love...fast forward to 2019/2020 and that love has grown. We also learned that autistic children almost always have that special interest that consume their lives, something that helps them calm down during fits and tantrums, something that helps ground them and brings them joy and for Karah it's Spidey.
Now...who is Spider-Heart? It's simple...Karah is Spider-Heart. Karah wants to be a voice actor she has told me multiple times before...and she wants to be Spider-Man...so I created a character for her based ON her...together we gave the character powers, which are all based on the POSITIVIES of autism. We also gave her a background story on HOW she got bit by a radioactive spider and what species of spider bit her (no spoilers here, you'll have to wait till I write the story)...we even designed a suit made especially with Karah and Spider-Heart in mind.
I made this character for Karah, so she has a superhero to look at and think "hey they're just like me, they act like me, they have problems like me" I wanted her to have someone that she can truly just connect with on a personal level. But, this character is not just for her, there are millions of children & adults around the world with autism that could benefit from reading about this character in a book or seeing this character on a show. So, I have a plan and a dream, ( a really crazy probably not realistic and will most likely NEVER happen dream) to pitch this character to comic writers and to Marvel, to bring this character to life, to see this character in action. Because Spider-Heart will prove to all these people that austic children and adults are just like everyone else and that they too can save the world, she can help prove to the world that "If different was a superpower...we'd be unstoppable"
So please stick around, follow us on this journey, on this blog as I post about updates on the suit, on the character development, as I bring this hero to life. I'll post stories about Karah and her daily "battle" (I don't like that word) with autism and things that we find helpful in our everyday lifes to help cope. I'll share issues we have, funny things she says ( because she has zero filter) I'll also be posting photos of Karah in her suit once we have it. Please share this blog with all of your friends and together (only together) can we #MakeSpiderHeartOfficial
