Stop VIC Government's Attack on Public Housing

The Victorian Labour Government's Public Housing Renewal Program is a direct attack on public housing, which will break up communities, displace families, sell off valuable public land cheaply to private developers and reduce the amount of public housing in the state. We are currently in the midst of a housing crisis, Victoria already has one of the lowest proportions of public housing in the state and there are already 35,000 people on the public housing waiting list.

We, the undersigned, call for the Housing Minister Martin Foley to stop with this harmful program and to instead construct more quality public housing to meet the need of vulnerable Victorians rather than transfer valuable public land into private hands.

Some information on the program and it's problems is listed below:

What is happening?

The government is selling nine inner Melbourne Public Housing estates to property developers. All the buildings on the estates will be demolished and people will be relocated. The land will be redeveloped into mostly private housing and some social housing.

Is social or community housing the same as public housing?

Social or community housing is different from public housing because it is run by a community housing provider, which can charge more rent than public housing tenants currently pay. The government will no longer own the property or provide the housing and the tenants won't have the same rights.

Is it true there will be 10% more public housing?

The government is increasing the amount of apartments by 10%, but they are reducing the amount of bedrooms within those apartments resulting in a net reduction in public housing. There will not be enough social housing on the estate for everyone to come back. The government will be replacing most of the units with one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, making it impossible for everyone, especially families living in three-bedroom apartments, to come back.
