Marshall will allow almost any student group to take advantage to the thousands of email addresses in their system, causing our mobile devices and email clients to buzz throughout the day. Today alone I received seven emails; not even the most aggressive marketing campaigns send that much in a single day.
MU uses the same email to solicit to students and faculty that they also use to send mail that is pertinent to the student's account. Students are not advised to simply "block" email@example.com, as they would miss important notifications from financial aid, the bursar, etc.
Unfortunately for us, the FCC only requires consent and opt-out for commercial messages. With that being said, there are many of us that consider receiving four or more emails a day in solicitation of different organizations and events to be highly intrusive.
I ask that others join me to sign this petition so that Marshall will allow for an opt-out of what many of us consider inescapable spam.
