We believe that not enough effort has been made to find an alternative site for these offices aside from turning to the little open space left in Marsaskala. This is an all-too-easy option which will rob valuable breathing and recreational space for Marsaskala residents. As guardians of our locality we have an obligation to protect our heritage and safeguard it for the future generations.

The decision by Marsaskala Local Council to build its offices in St Anne Garden violates this fundamental principle, core to Sustainable Development principles to which Malta is a signatory. Amidst the current trend to replace open spaces with “modern” buildings, the local council should set an example and reuse a building that not only is currently neglected but, once restored, will provide the local council, and hence Marsaskala, with dignified offices.

Having a local council office with a cultural connection to the town is more prestigious than an insensitive inharmonious structure. Saving our heritage will surely be far more appreciated by the local community. There are definitely other options available around Marsaskala if we stop looking at the issue stubbornly and open our eyes to the other unutilised buildings.
