Marriage Equality Supporters: Ask Obama to publicly speak out against the anti-lgbt marriage amendment in Minnesota

Will you sign my petition asking President Barack Obama to personally and publicly speak out against the anti-lgbt marriage ballot initiative in Minnesota, PRIOR to the November election?

In a few weeks, a Minnesota ballot measure will place LGBT civil rights in contest. I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Despite documented change in public opinion on marriage equality, the continued humiliation of the LGBT community at the ballot box may not be over — we need your help to forever end the need to vote on the civil rights of some Americans.

My husband and I are from Utah. When California legalized gay marriage, it was a dream come true. We made wedding plans. But soon after, Proposition 8 was placed on the California ballot. We spent hours at a Salt Lake City phone bank calling California, hoping that our efforts would help cancel out the anti-gay calls being made from BYU and other Mormon-run phone banks. But to no avail, Proposition 8 passed.

Eventually, we were able to get married in Massachusetts, which was the most beautiful day for us! Today, our jobs have taken us to Minneapolis, Minnesota where my husband is not legally recognized as such, even though he is, of course, my husband. But the State and Federal governments don’t see it that way, at least not in writing. Yet still, some Minnesotans want to deny us respect and further humiliate us by making such a discriminatory practice a matter of state law.

So for those of us who have been and are being denied respect and are now placed at risk of more discrimination, I wrote "Minneapolis" as an anthem and a call to action — we shouldn’t be asked to wait to enjoy the fundamental right we have and all people have, to marry the person they love, because they are part of the human family. We must act now to prevent an attempt to put in law the denial of a right that inheres in us as humans.

And for this, we in Minnesota need President Obama’s help and leadership.

Now that the Democratic platform officially endorses gay marriage, will you sign my petition asking President Barack Obama (a Democrat) to personally and publicly speak out against the anti-lgbt marriage ballot initiative in Minnesota, PRIOR to the November election?

Thank you.

Will you commit to sign my whitehouse.gov petition asking President Barack Obama to personally and publicly speak out against the anti-gay marriage ballot initiatives in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington, PRIOR to the November election.

Now that the Democratic platform officially endorses gay marriage, will you commit to sign my whitehouse.gov petition asking President Barack Obama (a Democrat) to personally and publicly speak out against the anti-gay marriage ballot initiative in Minnesotta, as well as the initiatives in Maine, Maryland, and Washington, PRIOR to the November election?

Please make sure to sign this change.org petition as well. Thank You.
