Bob Johnson started this petition to Marquette High School Administration and

The past few months have not been normal. As millions of people around the world fall ill to COVID-19, all schools have had to close to slow the spread of the disease. Online learning has become the way we replace going to school everyday. For many schools in our area, they are ending their school year early. For Michigan City Area Schools, their last day is May 13th. Their school year will end with no final exams. Chesterton High School will end on May 22nd with no finals. New Prairie High School will end on May 14th. They also do not have finals. Marquette's final day is June 4th and from June 1st through June 4th, we will have 2 finals every day.

Why is this bad? During all of this online learning, we are not learning much at all. I have spoke to many students from many different classes and they agree with that statement. Most of the assignments we get are just busy work, they have no real meaning behind them and do not help us advance in our knowledge of the class. The teachers are not posting stuff we should be learning in class right now and I don't blame them for that either. Teachers and students both have to face this new way of learning. This could just be down to that they don't have a standard to use on what work they should give us. Ending school early can give everyone a break and allow the staff to prepare work in the fall if we are in this situation still.

On top of not learning, a lot of our mental health has taken a toll. Our social lives are basically all online now. I haven't seen my friends in weeks. Not learning anything in school is stressful as well because you have no clue what will be on this final. If you add these factors on top of the stress of our everyday lives, it's hard to keep doing this work. I woke up this morning and saw how much busy work I had and I literally just didn't want to get out of bed. I had to watch a video about abstract paintings for photography. I had to do an 8 page Algebra 2 packet. I had to read an 8 page packet on communication. I know it sounds like I am complaining but I have to do this every single day and I know I am not alone in feeling this way. Many other students have it way worse then I do, doing assignments for classes that take many hours to complete.

I understand that Marquette wants to try to keep everything normal and from the outside looking in, that is a great idea. But when you are on the inside, it's a different story, one of frustration, stress, and just the feeling like it will never end. This disease is not going anywhere anytime soon. We could be dealing with this in our daily lives for the next 2 years. We cannot keep everything normal because nothing about this is normal. We need to adapt to the changes just like everyone else is doing.

Next week, while I am doing my work, I get to watch my friends from other schools enjoy their summer break while I sit at my desk still working on school work that will prove ultimately useless in the fall. I know we pay money for this education, but following what the government run schools is probably the best course of action, not just for the school's reputation, but for the student's mental health.
