Shari Carter started this petition to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and

In the early morning hours of September 2, 2020, a Facebook friend posted suicidal content and attempted to commit suicide. It took a team effort, but early this morning the police located him and he made it to the hospital in time. I called his local police dispatchers and spoke with them twice, but couldn’t get far as I didn’t have his number or address. I contacted his family through the Facebook Messenger App, but didn’t get a response until around 8:00 AM EST this morning which would’ve been too late. I also called Facebook’s customer service line, and it’s impossible to speak to anyone when there’s an actual emergency (called to attempt to be liaison between FB & Police). Luckily, an acquaintance had a phone number but wasn’t sure if it was current and from there, the police were able to dig and finally find him.

What if this isn’t the case the next time someone posts suicidal actions to their social media accounts?

There needs to be a streamlined process where we can circumvent user privacy concerns, but still ensure that users can get the help they need quickly.

I propose that Facebook & Instagram review their current business processes, where associates from these platforms have the ability to connect with law enforcement when there indeed is an actual emergency. Please also consider how AI and machine learning could best support this as well.

If you agree, please sign this petition so that those involved in time sensitive emergency situations can get the help they need from the authorities without delay.
