Dear Mr Zuckerberg
First of all, please allow me to tell you how much I love the wonderful social networking site you have created, called Facebook, which is a great place for connecting people worldwide while at the same time giving them easy and immediate access to news from the worlds of politics, society and culture, as well as providing entertainment and fun in the form of videos, songs and funny memes. My friends and myself are very grateful to you for creating and providing this great place.
However, yesterday I was appalled to learn that you have decided to continue to allow members to deny or downplay the most horrendous and vicious genocide of the 21st century, the Holocaust committed by Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 40s. This shocks me even the more considering that you are of Jewish faith yourself and it may have been your very ancestors or their relatives or friends who were affected by these atrocities.
You may or may not be aware of the fact that because of this dreadful historical „heritage“ and burden of Germany, it is illegal in this country to deny or downplay the Holocaust. Therefore corresponding posts will be automatically blocked on German Facebook. However, in my opinion, it is the duty of humanity and the world community at large to ban such utterances in speech and writing everywhere and anytime, as there is no way a crime on such a scale, based on and motivated by a racist and deeply inhumane ideology, can ever be denied or defended without legal consequences.
You have argued that people may not know the truth and post such content out of igorance. However, I am convinced that the large majority of people denying or downplaying the Holocaust do not do so out of ignorance but because of their racist, fascist or anti-Semitic attitude. Therefore these posts should not be tolerated by you or the Facebook administrators. To me, the thought that racists, fascists, Nazis and/or anti-Semitic people will be allowed and able to post such content on Facebook is unbearable and makes me consider leaving your networking site. Fortunately, I am not alone in thinking and feeling this way.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, hereby officially petition and urge you to reconsider your decision and ban all posts denying or downplaying the Holocaust on Facebook with immediate effect.
