Activate Facebook safety check for Sri Lankan flood
This petition had 1,053 supporters
Sri Lankans use Facebook more than any other social media. Sri Lanka's Western, Sabaragamuwa & Southern provinces are experiencing the worst flood in 14 years currently. More than half a million are already displaced in a country where total population is 22 million. Government is unable to provide significant relief, so many citizens have taken the burden to coordinate the relief effort.
Facebook safety check can ensure the safety of thousands of trapped citizens in patchy areas. It enables to send push notifications to those who are in danger, such as in areas with increasing floods, and information about safe areas to evacuate into. Urgently needed relief items can also be known.
Facebook safety check is supposed to automatically activate, but despite almost all Facebook users in the country posting about the flood situation, even after three days of gradually worsening floods, it hasn't happen. This petition is for Facebook to consider manually activating the safety check for Sri Lanka, a country that users Facebook more than any other social media site. Facebook has become the go to platform for citizen relief effort.
