Mark Ruffalo: Don't release the movie anything

Matt Bomer, a white cisgender man, will play a transgender sex worker in the movie "Anything". For over a decade, the transgender community have voiced our opposition to cisgender male actors being cast as transgender women and trans femmes. Despite near universal opposition in the community to this practice, in the past few years we've witnessed a parade of cisgender male actors -- Jared Leto, Eddie Redmayne, Jeffree Tambor -- gain accolades and awards for their 'courageous' performances of our lives. Every casting has led to community backlash and calls for Hollywood to start casting from the wide pool of talented transgender actresses. But, each time, Hollywood has largely ignored us. Well it's 2016, and enough is enough!

We're asking actor Mark Ruffalo, executive producer for the movie 'Anything', to not release this movie! Mark and the other producers of 'Anything' should know better. In fact, they do know better--- a transgender women specifically advised them against casting a cisgender man:

"I auditioned for this. I told them they shouldn't have a cis man play a trans woman. They didn't care." - actress Jen Richards (https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769927554778095618

The practice of using cisgender male actors to portray transgender women and trans femmes isn't just about erasure, or about depriving transgender actresses of roles they ought to get. It directly leads to violence against the most vulnerable in our community, particularly transgender women of color and trans femmes of color. Take a moment to read Jen Richards moving explanation why this is-- https://twitter.com/SmartAssJen/status/769928784426340353

Mark Rufallo presents himself on social media as a champion of social justice. He's even tweeted in the past about violence against transgender women of color. But actions speak louder than words, and it's time for liberal Hollywood actors to back up their words with actions. The movie has finished filming, but it doesn't have to be released! Mark, show yourself the champion of social justice you claim to be, and don't release this movie!

We also encourage Mark Ruffalo to donate to the Trans Justice Funding Project (http://www.transjusticefundingproject.org/) to  repair harm from this controversy.
