Stop elected officials from practicing law in the community they represent
Why this petition matters
Please join me in advocating for criminal justice reform, a more transparent local government and to hold our elected officials accountable to the law abiding voters.
I would like to change the Code of Ethics of the Henderson County Board of Commissioners to prohibit practicing law while elected to the board. Changing NC General Statute 84-2 to include County Commissioners is also a goal.
Elected officials should be prohibited from private practice law, or at the very least prohibited from practicing law in the county in which they are elected to represent.
North Carolina General Statute 84-2 prohibits some, but not all elected officials from private practice law.
Here in Henderson County NC, a County Commissioner is also in private practice law. Many photos of that Commissioner can be found online congratulating and handing out awards to the great men and women of the Henderson County Sheriffs Office.
That same Commissioner defends many of the people that the Sheriffs Office arrests.
This seems to be a huge conflict of interest. We as citizens need to get this put into law so that we know the loyalty of our elected officials.
