Gabrielle Ardisson started this petition to Representative Mark Meadows
In the United States, roughly 13% of Americans, age 12 and older, experience some form of hearing loss. Yet some of the major insurance providers, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare, and Medicaid, provide little to no coverage for hearing services, including hearing screenings, hearing aids, and rehabilitation. Did you know that the average cost of a single hearing aid is $2400? Most individuals with hearing loss require a pair, which brings the out of pocket cost to almost $5000. Not to mention that hearing aids generally last 4-6 years before they need to be replaced. These costs do not include batteries, which typically have to be replaced every other day. Due to the high expenses and little insurance help, only 15-30% of individuals with hearing loss are able to use hearing aids.

We, as students of Western Carolina University, are calling on our representative to push legislation that will require insurance providers to add coverage for hearing services, so that individuals, who experience hearing loss, can afford these services in order to increase their quality of life.
