Lisa Barnes started this petition to Yamhill County Commissioners Office and

We recently moved to Oregon from Colorado to live closer to family. We just finished building our home off of Bell Road in Newberg between Zimri and Springbrook Roads and have only lived here for a couple of months. Unfortunately we did not realize how terrible the traffic on Bell Road was before we moved in. We thought that Bell Road was a small country road, but it is in fact a heavily trafficked road on which drivers travel way too fast and recklessly. This stretch of road was never designed to handle the amount of traffic that drives it every day. Besides just being a small two lane road, there are several dangerous blind corners and blind hills.

On Thursday 6/3, I witnessed a horrific accident right in front of our house. A motorcyclist was passing a car while accelerating up the blind hill and collided with an oncoming car. Neither driver had time to react. It was a terrible scene and unfortunately the motorcyclist passed away on the side of the road after I and two other bystanders did our best to keep him alive until paramedics arrived. My heart breaks for everyone involved and their families.

We watch cars drive up and down Bell Road at ridiculously high speeds all day long. The posted speed limit of 45 is just way too fast considering the present obstacles and drivers rarely observe this speed limit. Our children drive these roads to school every day and there are several neighbors that live along here that have to walk across Bell Road to get their mail. I am terrified that they are going to end up getting hit and killed just because they live here.

There are many options available for speed mitigation along Bell Road that could and should be implemented. A change in the speed limit is one option, but speed can not always be patrolled or monitored. Other mitigation options such as adding stop signs, speed humps, and perhaps even speed cameras will help to control the speed and reduce the thoroughfare traffic.

We moved here to be part of this community and be closer to family, and I do not want to live in fear every single day that I will have to watch another person die, or that my kids may not make it home alive from school. Please sign this petition to encourage our Yamhill community leaders to prioritize mitigation strategies and funding to make this stretch of Bell Road safer for everyone.
