SAVE THE YAROOMBA LOGGERHEAD TURTLES & THE SUNSHINE COAST REGION FROM INAPPROPRIATE HIGHRISE DEVELOPMENT.

This petition had 2,421 supporters

Development and growth to the area is inevitable. However, please don't allow intensive, environmentally hazardous, 12 STOREY (maybe more) highrise towers along our Yaroomba and Sunshine Coasts's pristine coast line. Build to suit the area! Build to the CURRENT town plan, MAXIMUM 4 storeys.

Japanese company Sekisui House, is proposing an intense high rise development on 20 hectares at Yaroomba, near Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast. This is well in excess of what is allowed in the planning scheme. The Sunshine Coast Council is proposing amendments to the Planning Scheme to allow High rise and increased density at Yaroomba and other locations on the Sunshine Coast. Council will debate the amendments in closed private meeting in December 2014 negating transparency, accountability and community engagement.

NO CHANGES TO THE PLANNING SCHEME: NO HIGHRISE AT YAROOMBA.
The Mayor is supporting the building of high rise towers on the beach at Yaroomba. The Premier is also supporting it and has said a four storey limit is ridiculous! The local community is fighting it – strongly. We do not want any changes to the planning scheme that would allow more intensive high rise developments on the Sunshine Coast other than what the planning scheme currently allows. We treasure our natural environment, and laid back lifestyle.High rise at this location would be a desecration of Mt Coolum and an insult to the traditional custodians.

The proposed beach front land is also an important nesting site for the endangered loggerhead turtles who's habitat needs to be preserved. The turtle population would be decimated by the effects of artificial light, where the hatchlings can become confused, their journey down to the ocean would be compromised, and they would perish.

Sekisui has presented concept maps of dense high rise well in excess of current height restrictions. Sekisui’s intention is to present their development application once council has amended the planning scheme. This in itself is an immoral action by the Sunshine Coast Council and Sekisui. Please help us to send a clear message:
NO CHANGES TO THE PLANNING SCHEME: NO HIGHRISE AT YAROOMBA.

The scale of the development is massive and hugely invasive. To achieve the Mayor’s desire for high rise, Council is proposing to amend the Sunshine Coast planning scheme. In particular, to change the Strategic Framework, which is the part that: “sets the policy direction for the planning scheme and forms the basis for ensuring that appropriate development occurs within the planning scheme area for the life of the planning scheme.” The effect of these changes would be to allow high rise and intensive development right across the region.

The site at Yaroomba is just the first cab off the rank. The Mayor has talked about the Stockland block fronting the beach at Bokarina as another potential site. That means any vacant land or any land that becomes vacant could have high rise and intensive development stuck on it. In Yaroomba the current issue is about a 39 m high hotel and apartment blocks. But as the developer, Sekisui House, has said, they are limited to that height only because of their proximity to the airport.

HIGH RISE IN YOUR PART OF THE SUNSHINE COAST COULD BE A LOT HIGHER THAN 12 STOREYS; PLEASE HELP US TO SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE TO COUNCIL, sign this petition and make a comment. Your comments will be copied in to the mayor and the councillors.

Thankyou for participating and contributing to this vitally important issue the Sunshine Coast is facing.
