In attempt to make Cypress-Fairbanks ISD's junior high and high schools more safe, the district's safety and security committee announced the implementation of a clear backpack policy this morning (June 21st, 2018). This policy would go in effect at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year.
Although the policy's intentions are to make CFISD campuses less prone to gun violence, it poses greater potential for harm than it does security. The policy stands as an ineffective illusion of heightened security.
Firstly, this policy stands as a clear invasion of student privacy. The clear bags inherently criminalize all students and deviate from CFISD's motto of "empowering" these students. Additionally, the clear bags would invite greater chances for theft of belongings, as most students carry expensive phones, laptops, and calculators with them to school. Also, a weapon easily could be concealed by other contents in the clear bag.
Clear backpacks are a band-aid solution to a far-reaching problem, one that requires action at the state and national level. By implementing this policy, we would be prioritizing a falsity of security over the comfort and privacy of students.
