Take action to increase road safety for our children around Oatley West Public School.

We are setting up a petition as concerned residents of Oatley Park Avenue in Oatley.
On the afternoon of 7th March 2017 I returned home to see several ambulances, police cars and fire engines tending an incident in the street. I feared the worst expecting to see an Oatley West Public School (OWPS) child or parent hit by a car. It could easily have been one of my own children as my husband had collected them from school that day. Thankfully no one was hurt, however, there had been a serious incident where a car had flipped over as the result of hitting the back of a parked car. The driver of the vehicle was okay which we are also very grateful for.
Our family has lived on the street since 2008. In 2011 our youngest daughter started at OWPS and there were three Kindergarten classes. We have watched the number of families joining the school grow each year and in the last two years the number of Kindergarten classes has grown to five! The school has added new demountable classrooms to accommodate the growing number of children.
The traffic congestion and inherent dangers have grown exponentially with the population at the school. The School Principal often writes in the newsletter about near incidents in and around the school precinct. Along with many other parents and residents in the community we fear that there will soon be a more serious incident and we feel that action must be taken.
OWPS communicates an informal traffic management plan whereby parents collecting or dropping children to school should drive one way up Oatley Park Avenue and then proceed around Dame Mary Gilmore Road exiting via either Park Avenue or Bay Road. The plan is not enforced by law and is only known by the school community not by local residents.
We would like to see this, or a similar traffic management plan, formalised and enforced by law during school zone hours. We would also propose that there be new pedestrian crossings put in at the Short Street / Oatley Park Avenue intersection and the Park Avenue / Oatley Park Avenue intersection to allow children to cross the roads in the immediate school area safely.
We hope you will sign this petition and that the relevant decision makers at Georges River Council will take this seriously and take steps to ensure the safety of children and residents in our community.
