Why this petition matters

Iowa legislators are trying to prevent transgender students from participating in school sports. This now includes college sports, the bill states, "A governmental entity, accredited non-public school, or school district shall not be liable to any student for complying with subsection 1" subsection 1 states, "An interscholastic athletic team, sport, or athletic event that is sponsored or sanctioned by an accredited nonpublic school, school district, or organization as defined in section 280.13, must be designated as one of the following, based on the sex at birth of the participating students:

  1. Females, women, or girls.
  2. Males, men, or boys
  3. Coeducational or mixed"

Meaning that we cannot take action about this discrimination.

The bill would make it so that students in sports must be separated by sex assigned at birth. The first mentioned quote also states, in simpler terms, that students are not allowed to retaliate or protest this law, this is a direct attack against the trans community in so many different ways. When Trans students identities are not confirmed by their family and the people around them they are less likely to commit suicide according to The Trevor Project, this kind of thing would make trans suicide rates jump around the state of Iowa
