Increase Or End The 30 Hour Absence Limit

This petition is being created because students feel that the 30 hours of absences allotted each quarter is an unjust rule and should either be increased or terminated completely. We feel that our attendance lies at the discretion of our parents. We understand the need to prevent truancy, however the solution is not to make generalizations about every student. To put it into perspective, 30 hours is under 5 days of school. At a school packed with over 3,000 students, it is not uncommon for a student to get sick multiple times throughout a quarter. State law dictates that students whom are infectious or contagious should not attend school until the illness resolves. This places them in a problematic place, as they expect us to miss school, but at the same time expect us to not miss it. Also, state and local governments should not be dictating when parents can excuse their children unless it is concerning an actual case of truancy.
