Let's remind Marion County Public School administrators that no single parent has the right to dictate what books Fort King Middle Schoolers can read!
On January 23, Marion school administrators removed The Facts Speak for Themselves, by Brock Cole from the Fort King Middle School library in Ocala, Florida. A committee will recommend a final decision after reviewing the book.

The Facts Speak for Themselves is an account of sexual assault, parental neglect and violence as narrated by a 13-year-old survivor. For “speak(ing) to the remarkable resilience of the human spirit and its capacity to survive, forgive, and go forward,” it was a National Book Award for Young People’s Literature finalist in 1997. Publisher’s Weekly has called The Facts Speak for Themselves “a brilliant psychological study” and recommends it for readers ages 12 and up.
Just as the #metoo movement has sparked a welcome and much-needed national dialogue about sexual misconduct, The Facts Speak for Themselves provides a safe context for young people to think about important concepts including consent, maturity, and the right to exercise agency over one's own body.
While some students may not yet be prepared to engage such sensitive issues, those who are should be afforded the freedom to read The Facts Speak for Themselves.
