Aina Olsson started this petition to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar

This is an official request by concerned residents of MCAS Miramar.

On February 2nd, 2020, different media outlets in San Diego announced that MCAS Miramar was expecting a flight with passengers from China on Monday, February 3rd, 2020.  This news was shared on different military social media platforms including Facebook.  Following this news, MCAS Miramar (@MCAS MiramarCA) issued a statement which was also shared on Facebook stating:

" At this time, @MCASMIRAMARCA can confirm there are no flights arriving at the air station on Monday, Feb. 3rd with passengers originating overseas or from areas affected by the Corona Virus. Reports stating otherwise are inaccurate."

Today, February 3rd, 2020, MCAS Miramar Commanding Officer, issued a letter stating that:

"Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper has tasked Marine Corps Air Station Miramar with supporting the potential repatriation of American Citizens subject to federal quarantine due to the outbreak.” …  (The letter is widely available on Facebook)

In the letter, Commanding Officer Dockery asks for the support of the Marines, Sailors and Families of MCAS Miramar.

The families residing in MCAS Miramar would like to support MCAS Miramar's leadership however, to do so, we are requesting a town hall meeting with leadership. The primary concern is the safety of the families, a large portion of whom are enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program, and many of whom are already immune-compromised individuals, therefore, more susceptible to viral infections such as the Corona Virus.

The following are some of the concerns residents have and would like addressed, at the town hall meeting, as soon as possible:

Safeguards for Families

  • What are the protocols for the quarantine?
  • If no DOD personnel will be involved, will the individuals providing care be properly screened?
  • What will be the proximity of these quarantined individuals in relation to military family housing and military personnel in the barracks?

Stigmatization of children in school

  • The news that MCAS Miramar will be used to house individuals that might have been exposed to the Corona Virus is already in the public domain therefore, parents want to know, what work have the school liaison officers done to ensure our children are not stigmatized in their schools?
  • Residents want to ensure our children will not be singled out in school, for living in a military installation that will quarantine individuals who might have been affected by the Corona Virus.

Medical Information on the Corona Virus

  • Residents want medical professional information on the Corona Virus. There is so much information out there and it is difficult to know what is true or what is not true thus, residents would like medical personnel to be in attendance, at the town hall meeting, to educate the residents.
  • Residents want to know how the virus is transmitted.
  • How do we safeguard ourselves and our children? What additional precautions will be made to ensure areas of general public use are disinfected and sanitized appropriately?
  • What precautions can we take as residents while we host these individuals on our base?

To circumvent the spread of rumors and misinformation, we feel it is in the best interest of our community, to hear from our leadership, in a manner that promotes transparency.

Thank you for your assistance and understanding.
