For as long as plastic has existed, it has infested our waters and Marine Ecosystems, killing animals and sea creatures by the millions each year (One Green Planet). It has to stop! Plastic in our oceans will not disappear in a week, nor will it be gone on months or years. To truly take a step toward a cleaner, safer world, we need to reduce the amount of plastic that gets in our ocean in the first place. We must do everything in our power to keep it from falling out of trash cans, being littered, or being used at all. Sadly, 500 million plastic drinking straws are used and thrown away annually by Americans. To understand in scale how much that is, all those straws would fill up 125 school buses to the very top every day (National Park Service). This is just one example of the plague of plastic on our planet. Help us take a step forward, and ban plastic drinking straws from restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores in Marin County, replacing them with eco-friendly, biodegradable, biocompostable, corn starch straws! Cornstarch straws are made of corn starch that has been converted into polymers. Real plastic has polymers in it to make it feel and look Iike real plastic. These compostable straws are made by mixing the cornstarch and polymers to make Polylactic acid, which can be heated in order to mold and shape into drinking cups, bags, take-out boxes, cutlery, bottles, straws, and more. In the end, it looks and feels exactly like normal plastic. Plus, there are no toxic chemicals such as polyvynl chloride or dioxin.

When plastic gets in the Marine Ecosystem, it breaks down into microplastics. Little sea creatures injest microplastics. Bigger ocean animals, like fish or crabs, eat those small creatures. We eat the fish and crabs, therefore we are injesting microplastics as well. I care about the animals choking on plastic, or getting poisoned. And potentially dying. I also care about the people getting sick from eating animals that have been poisened. Once, a harp seal pup was found dead by a government funded organization. When a veterinary Pathologist examined the pup, he found something that broke his heart. The pup had a small piece of plastic in his stomach, that caused him, at eight months old, to perish. We are the only ones to blame for this pup’s death. We are the guilty culprites of millions of animals dying every year. Every seal pup that dies from plastic injestion is solely on us. Help us save the animals and our Marine Ecosystem. Help make the County of Marin a better place!
