North Quad 160, known to some as the Language Lab or NQ Study Lounge, has been taken from the Ball State student population. NQ 160 was a fantastic place for students to study, relax, hold meetings, and experience news and movies from other countries around the globe.
Many departments find their homes in the North Quad Building including, but not limited to; the departments of Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, and Foreign Languages. The students of all of these departments often find themselves in the North Quad Building for classes or meetings with professors. Not to mention any students that need to visit the College of Science and Humanities main office. NQ 160 was an important pass-through for these students and an even better study lounge for those that needed a minute to refresh course materials without having to travel to other buildings just to sit down and read before class.
Unfortunately the powers that be at Ball State University, have removed access to this room from all students that are not affiliated with BSU Athletics. This safe haven of knowledge within North Quad has been torn from our grasps for the sake of a better study area for athletes.
We are not asking simply to take away a dedicated space for athletes that need assistance meeting NCAA standards for study and achievement, but that space was a poor decision. It was a poor decision made without the input of the professors, students, and other faculty that use the room on a daily basis. It doesn't matter how temporary it is, that room belongs to the entire student population.
In a recent article in the Ball State Daily News, Marilyn Buck, interim provost and interim president for academic affairs, said that we can simply use the furniture that was moved to the halls for study. Our question to that is if the noisy halls are good enough for the regular student population to study in, why isn't it good enough for the student athletes? We have students who work full-time and are also full-time students, why don't they get to use that special room? We have full-time students who are full time parents or grandparents, why don't they get to use that room? We have students who take 18+ credit hours in a semester, and yet they can't use that room.
This petition is to show Marilyn Buck and our new President, Geoffrey Mearns, that our voices as paying students of Ball State University will not be silenced, and that we have just as much right to access NQ 160 as any student athlete does.
Please, share and sign this petition with any and all Ball State students and faculty who believe this room should return to use for the public!
