Mariano's: Less Plastic, More Paper

With the staggering number of more than 1 trillion plastic bags used worldwide each year, 92 billion of those plastic bags are used in the United States. Plastic bags are not always the most eco-friendly; they take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Not to mention the harmful chemicals they can emit into our water and soil, and the 100 million tons of plastic debis that are floating around in the oceans and threatening the health and safety of marine life. We as environmentally conscious consumers who often shop at Mariano's, offer a small solution to this growing plastic pandemic: using more paper bags over plastic in the checkout lines. Instead of asking, "Paper or plastic?", an employee should always use paper unless the customer asks otherwise. We also propose that each plastic bag should have a small charge. We realize that plastic is more cost effective, but more items can fit in each paper bag, and this small charge would compensate for this difference in price. Our main goal is to try and make as much of a difference as possible when it comes to making the world a healthier place to live.
