The United States' Senate was created to ensure the limitation of extremist ideas and legislation being created. However, it is clear to see that the current parties have driven each other into creating extreme viewpoints, and the rules created over 100 years ago no longer apply to our current political climate. The key issue among this is the destruction of the Filibuster, which currently limits the passing of legislation needed and desired by much of the United States' population.

The first issue within this topic is the controversy surrounding the Filibuster. The filibuster was first used in 1837, when the Whig party took advantage of a rule change that no longer allowed the majority party to stop a debate in the Senate. In 1917, the senate adopted the "cloture," a rule requiring 67 senators to stop a filibuster. This extremely limited the power of the majority party, and with the current abuse of the filibuster within the Senate, progress is nearly impossible.

The second main issue within this topic is the unequal representation of people  and their beliefs. While the Senate may have originally been intended to ensure more equity within the laws that are passed, it now creates an unfair distribution of votes and representation among our country.

The filibuster further pushes and exploits this issue, which is why this petition is going to the Washington State Senators requesting that they introduce an ammendment to the senate rules removing the filibuster.
