Students of Howard University started this petition to Marcus Lyles and

There have been several incidents on and around Howard University's Campus. Students have been subjected to armed and unarmed robberies, shootings, physical altercations and even sexual assaults. There have been many warnings to students about taking care of themselves, but there has not been any steps taken to increase security measures around campus. Several students have even reported attempts to use the campus's emergency page buttons only to discover during their crises that three of the pagers have not worked. There are several dimmed areas about campus where students have been targeted including parking lots, sidewalks, and even right in front of dorms. Cars are being broken into on campus parking lots, and again the only word released from Campus Police Chief of Police was to ensure that nothing is to be left visible in cars. Students are withdrawing from school, transferring institutions, and/or moving off campus out of fear from previous crimes, possible forthcoming crimes, and he failure from this administration's lack of actions that evidently neglects the safety of students.

Campus police needs to take responsibility in ensuring that students have a blanket of protection while within the vicinity of Howard University. There needs to be a patrolling campus police officer, an assigned officer outside of all dorms off campus, and added security measures to get into buildings (e.g. dorms, libraries, and/or lecture buildings). Howard University needs to repair all inoperable emergency blue call buttons. Howard University needs to fix or replace light fixtures in all parking lots as well as assign active campus police patrols to those lots to ensure the safety of students and their belongings, especially for those students arriving home late or leaving campus late. The fact that the majority of Howard's population is female and nothing is being done for the security and safety of students is beyond unfathomable. Howard University also needs to make the knowledge and use of campus escort more prevalent.

This message is to Mr. Marcus Lyles, Executive Director for Safety and Security/ Chief of Police, and to President Wayne A. I. Fredrick, M.D., MBA. What if this was your daughter or son being assaulted and made victim to thieves? What if this was your significant other or even you? I understand that there may be financial cuts that prevent an immediate resolution, but there needs to be an action plan within the coming weeks to ensure students are safe. What good is an institution when nothing is done to protect the students' day to day life within that institution? The ONLY time there had been increased security measures was during Homecoming, and outside of that week, students are forced to fend for themselves. The message being sent to criminals is an understood notion that nothing will be done, which continues to make Howard University students easy targets. What is it going to take for students to feel protected? Or better yet, what will it take for you to feel like you need to protect us?
