A PUBLIC REFERENDUM for Marriage Equity for Northern Ireland "ITS TIME!"
0 have signed. Let’s get to 5,000!
It was truly amazing to see over 20,000 people take to the streets of Belfast Saturday 1st July 2017, who are all looking for change and wanting to live in an equal society,
Where everyone can have the same legal rights and protection that their own mum and dad have!
This is not just for equality for couples today, so they can get married tomorrow, but
FOR THE NEXT GENERATION. TO GROW UP KNOWING THAT YOU ARE AS IMPORTANT, RESPECTED AND PROTECTED BY YOUR COUNTRY AS EVERYONE ELSE IN IT IS.
I don’t want you to grow up in a society that tells you that there’s something wrong with you, that you’re somehow different or bad.
When you class us legally as different, when you hide predjudice behind religious beliefs and use legislation to deny us the same rights as our friends and families,
you are telling us that you think there’s something wrong with us.
I’m very, very lucky that I come from such a supportive family, my parents have always encouraged me and loved me unconditionally. I didn’t need to come out because I was never in, I could never blend in when I was born to stand out.
My older brother is also gay, but he never felt that he could be gay. He struggled with fitting in and it took him to a very dark place. We very nearly lost him.
He struggled so much because society told him that he had to have a wife and kids and a good job, be a respectable married man.
But if you grow up gay in a society that tells you that your not the same as everyone else, that you can’t have the same recognition of who you love, then your relationships will never be as important as heterosexual people.
You’re tolerated, but not legally recognised. Accepted, but not equal. Is it any wonder that my brother, like so many other people went to that dark place.
Nowadays I am thrilled to tell you that my brother is happy and very successful with a wonderful partner called Michael. They’ve been together for over a decade and are very much looking forward to the day that they can call each other husband and husband.
In 2015 the people of the South of Ireland voted with a public referendum to legalise gay marriage, the very first country in the world to do it by public vote, with an overwhelming majority.
Go to Dublin, or Cork or Galway,
THE SKY HASN’T CAVED IN.
SOCIETY HASN’T FALLEN APART!
STRAIGHT PEOPLE’S MARRAIGES AND FAMILY VALUES HAVEN’T BEEN DESTROYED!
They were able to see that is a legal argument,
not a religious one.
JUST SO WE ARE CLEAR Its Not So I Can Get Married in a church.
I just want the same married status and the same legal rights and protection for my Paterner and I
“THAT MY MUM AND DAD HAVE” .
But now is the time that all of us have to speak up.
LESBIAN, GAY, BI, TRANS , QUEER, INTERSEX, AND OUR STRAIGHT allies.
No matter who you are…
YOU NEED TO FIND YOUR VOICE. AND YOU NEED TO USE IT RIGHT NOW.
You need to talk to your friends, your families, your work collegues, your local MP’s, the busman, the bin man. Mary across the road.
The Marriage Equality referendum down south wasn’t won by politiicians, it was won by ordinary people making their voices heard and changing society's view.
You need to get your voice out there. And let them know why you deserve to be given the same legal rights and status as everyone else.
We need to help our heterosexual friends and families know how it feels like to be on the outside of society looking in. To be exactly the same and yet feel so different from everyone else.
You see, this is bigger than you or I, this is an issue that effects everyone in Northern Ireland!
Everyone who has a LGBTQI friend, family member, work colleague or if you just want the same basic human rights to be afforded to everyone in N.I
Equality is not just about today,
It's about the people who came before us, who fought and went to prison for our civil rights, so we could, take to the streets safely,
It's for all the couples in love now who cant have there love recognised,
and most importantly THE NEXT GENERATION.
We need to normalise this in everyday society, to set an example to other countries that gay relationships are not a frightening thing, and to let them know that a loving relationship is a normal natural thing, regardless of whom it is between. In this way, maybe we can prevent people from losing their lives in countries where being gay is still a crime. This isn't just for us, it's for the whole world.
If you are heterosexual signing this will not effect your life, but will change the life of hundreds and thousands of people, and will also help to save lives.
So I'm asking you to look deep in your soul and ask yourself do you really want to deny some love, respect, protection, and the right to live a normal, happy life!
Our Government is not siting at the moment so let get lots of signatures, and tell Teresa May that the People of N.I WANT CHANGE so that we have the same right as all of the UK and Ireland.
