Bong Bong Marcos, the new elected Philippine president has bared his plan to raise taxes to carry out his regime for the next six years. This means squeezing money out of the already cash-strapped citizens who are just trying to get by after the onslaught of the pandemic. The irony is, this man failed to file his Income Tax Return for 4 years from 1982-1985 and was convicted of tax evasion in 1995. What is more repulsive is, if ordinary citizens did the same, they would be hauled off to jail and be demanded to pay ASAP. Marcos’ stolen wealth from the government coffers when his father ruled the country as a dictator has ballooned over time and as the executor of his father’s properties, he is asked to pay P203 billion in estate taxes. This money if collected, would finance many government projects that could uplift the lives of the poor. Therefore, before increasing taxes that most citizens cannot afford, we the citizens who care, demand for him to pay his dues first.
