Move Children's Athletic Fields Away from busy Intersections

Move Children's Athletic Fields Away from busy Intersections
Why this petition matters
On April 26, 2016, our community almost lost Principal Javier Perez, due to a drunk driver losing control of her vehicle and ramming into the baseball field that T-ballers were playing on, located at SW 117TH AVENUE and near Coral Way (by Sluggers Batting Cages). Today, another horrific accident occurred, this time at Flagami (Brothers to the Rescue) Baseball Field. One of our public transportation buses plummeted into the concession stand and (although I don't know firsthand any details), I know of the director (Flagami Baseball), Canino, was directly impacted and is in the hospital. I have lived in Miami for the last 41 years and I am a proud US Citizen and Resident of Miami, but when Javi was hurt, I wished I could have done more. It's senseless that 4 year old were succomed to play in this unsafe area. Today's accident reminds me of the anger I felt at the tragedy we experienced with Javi. God protected everyone else on that field, luckily, but Javi shouldnot hhave lost his legs that day and Canino shouldn't be a victim of this tragic accident today. 30 years ago we weren't as over populated as we are today, back then it may have been okay to play ball near this busy intersection, but it isn't today. I recall feeling unsafe 20 years ago when my little cousin use to play there. There's no need to expose anyone, not a field director, not a parent or an athlete's family, not a young ball player, etc. to a situation such as the one we experienced 4 years ago with Javi and again today. I implore you, our Senators and Congressmen, to move these (in this case, Baseball) fields out of busy intersections in order to minimize tragic moments as this. Javi lost both of his legs and life as he (and his family and all of us who knew him) knew it forever changed. If there's any type of athletic field near busy intersections they should be relocated. In the case of Flagami, sell the land, relocate the park perhaps to a section of A. D. Doug Barnes Park, or add fields to Tamiami (where the Fair Parking is), but keep our community safe. I can't even imagine the sleepless nights, nightmares, and intermittent thoughts of panic, have flooded Jordan, Sabrina (Javi's children), and the rest of the kids and families that day seeing that car pin Javi... This should have never happened. That bus today... We've been lucky to not have seen kids at the mercy of decisions that should have been acted upon. These signatures represent the wishes our Miami community has to keep each other safe, especially when we choose to distract ourselves from our work and social pressures in order to see our little ones playing the sport they love. We shouldn't feel threatened by the possibility of a car losing control only to cause the death of a child, their loved one or an innocent bystander.
