Dear Fellow Changers,

I’ve personally signed various petitions throughout the years and feel a sense of satisfaction in knowing that I’ve chosen to participate in a small part to help change someone else’s life.  I know that you all will do your best in helping me do the same for my loved one.

Miguel Pedraza is a father, a son, a brother, and my most loyal friend.

Growing up, Miguel and I unconsciously looked for individuals who would be a type of role model to us and unfortunately the people we often chose weren’t worthy candidates. I also was involved with these individuals at various times but thankfully not at this particular incident. A late night in November of 2005, Miguel and our late associates decided they needed swift money so they chose burglary as the unfortunate fastest route to achieve this. Please stay with me here. The associates he drove to the house proceeded to get out, go into the house, and robbed them. Someone within the house tried to stop the act taking matters into his own hands, and one of the associates shot him. The man suffered life threatening wounds and later passed away. During the encounter, Miguel was still in the car, waiting.  After the confrontation, the associate got back into the vehicle and proceeded to tell him what had happened. Miguel was distraught in learning of the huge confrontation. He was confused and unsure of what to do, so they drove off. The man who took another person’s life was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Miguel was given a life sentence without parole as well. Yes, one should be held accountable for his actions but Miguel’s hand wasn’t on that gun when he pulled that trigger. The last thing he ever wanted was for anyone to be harmed and yet in these types of situations unfortunate things tend to happen.

I hope you can find it within yourself to give him a second chance as I was given. I was out of town the night this very unfortunate event happened. I’m afraid to say that if I hadn’t been out of town I probably would have been there myself. I feel as if a divine intervention happened and gave me a second chance that I never even asked for.

I know that every single person who will read this has been faced with a type of regret somewhere in their life. It may have been you who disobeyed an authority figure, harsh words towards a loved one, a petty crime that landed you in jail for a night, cheating on a spouse or a lie that ended up surfacing later on that met with harsh consequences. Many people have had rough times within the years of adolescence and early adulthood, but an individual shouldn’t be imprisoned for the Rest of their Life due to a poor decision, and at the hands of someone else’s disregard for life. I know that almost everyone can agree that everybody deserves a second chance in life. He deserves a second chance to be a better Father to his beautiful daughters; he so desperately longs to have relationships with, a better citizen and a better son to his wonderful parents. Please join me in asking the Governor of Florida to release Miguel, for 11 years time served.

Did you know: Taxpayers pay about $1,800,000,000 to keep non-violent prisoners locked up for the rest of their lives.

Did you know: In California, a Bill named, SB1437 has been approved for re-sentencing. (This new Bill should be implemented across the United States)

Let me introduce you to the Miguel today: Miguel was always one to go out of his way for others, but now he does it in a healthy capacity and for the right people. He is a teacher’s assistant and education clerk in prison. He enjoys helping other men further their education. In pursuit of a new life and new habits, he began to read many books and found the Bible to be a great comfort to his soul throughout these many years. Many may argue this is just a prison salvation, but after knowing my dear friend for many years prior to this incarceration, I can tell you there are times when I barely recognize our conversations because he has changed so much for the better. Sometimes in life it takes a big event to wake an individual up from their own ways and they’re able to see the people and places they took for granted years before. Join me; Join us, in ending an endless road of Life in Prison.

Miguel had no prior jail time before this incident, no criminal history at all and is a citizen of the United States of America.

He is you and he is me...He represents everyone who has ever made a wrong decision and desires to make it right and start over.  Life does not get better BY CHANCE; it gets better BY A CHOICE, THEN CHANGE.

I want to sincerely thank you for taking the time to read this and allowing your heart to be your guide. Will you join his family and I, in helping us make a huge difference in this young man’s life?
