Grant Permanent Resident Status to Uzma Hanif Qureshi

To: Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada; Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship; Jagmeet Singh, NDP Critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

I, Uzma Hanif Qureshi, am requesting you to grant me Permanent Resident status as I have been living in Toronto with my Husband and two minor daughters, all Canadian citizens, for more than twelve years.

While a letter outlining the chronology of my case has already been sent to your office, I find myself in a state of limbo because of the constant threat of deportation to Pakistan where my and my daughters lives are at risk under the pretext of honor killing which is in vogue amongst a large section of the population as is evident from various Amnesty International Reports.

My ex-husband who fraudulently and with malicious intentions brought me to this country on a spousal Sponsorship visa as he was a Canadian resident, and later abandoned me as soon as I arrived. As a result I had to take refuge with one of my maternal uncles and spent more than an year. During this period he put forward terms which were morally and religiously unacceptable leaving me with no other option but to go to court for a divorce which was eventually granted.

Thereafter I got married to my present husband from whom I have two daughters. Not satisfied with what torture he had put me through and out of sheer vindictiveness my ex-husband filed a complaint against me in 2006 to the Immigration Department. Despite my appeals to the CIC, IRB, and the court, the threat of deportation still looms large over my head.

You can provide me protection by exercising your discretion under Section 25.1 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and granting me the same Permanent Resident status enjoyed by over 25,000 Syrians recently welcomed to Canada.

On compassionate and humanitarian basis, I request you to kindly uphold my appeal to stay in Canada so that I can bring up my children in a Country which is safe, and provides equal chances for growth to everyone. No wonder that is why Canada is Known As a land of opportunities. Lastly, I am sincerely sorry for any mistake that I may have made unknowingly.
