Why this petition matters

Started by Fauzia Jabeen

Use of facial recognition technology has been surfacing in the news for the past several years. People of Ontario, especially the minority communities (BIPOC) are concerned that this unreliable, unjust, and invasive technology which results in misidentifying people, women, and children 98% of the time, or putting them under surveillance without proof or even a valid reason for suspicion. This concern also covers the aspect that access to these databases will give an opportunity to anyone to use it for personal grudges and lead to more systemic abuse.

In June 2021, news of its use by the RCMP surfaced. RCMP obtained this technology from Clearview AI to search through massive repositories of Canadian people who are innocent for any suspicion of crime. This presented a serious violation of privacy.
Instead of providing safety, this software was and is being used to control and oppress people, as it is being used in authoritative countries.

The Liberal government want to set up a database for Canadian passport holders but is the loss of privacy, increased possibility of identity theft and increase in racial profiling worth the benefits gained from this?

We demand, like BC, AB and QC, that the Ontario government should protect Ontarians from Clearview AI and other such companies through binding orders from their privacy regulators.
